Self-catering gite/ villa accommodation in the Charente, South West France
Langlade is a lovely old former cognac estate steeped in local history and tradition. So far the owners have been able to trace the history of the property back to the mid 1600's, though with further digging they are confident they will be able to trace back even further. Among the more illustrious previous owners of L'Anglade have been Dangiaud de L'Anglade, advocat to the Prince of Tallyrand and Lord of Perigord. More recently, Francis Ganivet Desgraviers, a famous French soldier was born on the property in 1768. In later life Degraviers went on to become a famous and muchdecorated General in the Army before retiring in 1807 to get married.
According to the history books, his new wife proved to be something of a heartscald which prompted Degraviers to leave the matrimonial home after just two years of marriage and rejoin the army. Alas, his second term in the army proved to be nearly as shortlived as his marriage with Degraviers being fatally injured at the battle of Arapiles, Salamanca in 1812.
Not having being lived in for over 25 years, Langlade was in a very rundown condition when the present owners acquired the property in early 1994. Over the course of a number of years since then a major renovation programmer has been undertaken to restore the property to its former glory (to see some photos of before and after the renovation work had been completed, please click on any of the thumbnail images below)
Today the property, which is set in over three acres of mature wooded and landscaped gardens comprises of four dwellings - the main house (which is owner occupied), a caretakers cottage and our two beautifully renovated holiday homes, Villa Anglade and La Petite Anglade.
Each gite has been finished to the highest standard offering guests every comfort and convenience whilst at the same time maintaining all the traditional warmth and charm of oak exposed ceiling beams, wood burning fireplaces or stoves and open stonework walls. A further attraction is that each holiday villa has its own large private terrace which is ideal for alfresco dining or just soaking up the sun. Meanwhile each property also has exclusive use of its own private 5x10 metre swimming pool both of which have security fences to maximise childrens safety.
The Renovation of Langlade

For anyone who might be interested we started renovation of the main house in mid 1994 and finshed renovating the last house, Le Nid, in 2004!
